I first learned his name from Chernoff inequality and was amazed at his versatility. Yes... his works cover from probability theory, mathematical statistics to exploratory data analysis. I was so trilled when I met him for the first time and he from time to time joins CHASC meeting.

Chernoff faces are fun. It's probably worth mentioning that Herman Chernoff is a giant of 20th century statististics and his faces are well-known but certainly not his most important work. He made seminal contributions to sequential experimental design and decision theory. He is still active: Herman Chernoff's web site.

Of tangential interest to astronomers: Cornell astronomer David Chernoff, who works in many fields including astrostatistics, is Herman Chernoff's nephew!
